About Safe Clicks
Social media companies promote children’s accounts to adults, but they cannot guarantee those adults are safe. That decision should be left to parents and children themselves. Our purpose is simple: to protect children online by ensuring that algorithms do not create unsafe connections.
Safe Clicks works to:
-
Advocate for policy change so that federal legislation prevents platforms from promoting children’s accounts to adults.
-
Raise awareness among parents, educators, and students about algorithm-driven risks.
-
Empower youth voices by ensuring that at least one board member of Safe Clicks is under 18, because children should have a say in how they are protected online.
-
Promote safer technology design by urging companies to prioritize children’s safety over algorithmic engagement.
We believe that protecting children online requires both technological innovation and social responsibility. Safe Clicks is not only a campaign—it is a movement to ensure that technology reflects the values of safety, trust, and respect for children’s autonomy.

Proposed Changes to Social Media Platforms
-
Default Safety Setting for Minors
-
Children’s accounts (under 18) should automatically be excluded from being suggested to adults through “People You May Know” or similar connection tools.
-
This feature should be opt-in only: a child and their parent/guardian would need to actively choose to allow adult connection suggestions.
-
-
Parent & Child Choice
-
Provide a clear, easy-to-use setting where parents and children together can decide whether to enable adult connection suggestions.
-
This choice should require explicit consent (not hidden in fine print or default-on toggles).
-
-
Transparency in Algorithms
-
Platforms must clearly explain how children’s accounts are suggested to others and what safeguards are in place.
-
Parents and guardians should be able to see and adjust who can view or connect with their child’s account.
-
-
Collaboration with Experts
-
Work with child safety organizations, educators, and youth advocates to ensure policies reflect real risks and provide evidence-based protections.
-
Regularly review and update these features as online risks evolve.
